![]() Q: What would you say to a woman who, after all this, may still be on the fence about whether to embrace her gray?Ī: Above anything, a woman needs to feel comfortable with her hair style. Weekly deep conditioning treatments are also a good idea to keep the hair soft and healthy. It is important for women with white hair to take proper care of their strands by using a clearing rinse or a shampoo developed specifically to prevent oxidation. Beautiful, white silver hair needs a great cut and should be sleek and shiny, not dry and dull and it can look incredibly modern. Can you look as “hip” with fully white hair as you can with silver?Ī: Yes, the process is the same, but the maintenance is a little higher. Q: If your naturally aging hair color is white, is the process the same. Paired with a beautiful modern haircut, there is no comparison. Q: Is it true that any woman, no matter how attractive she looks in silver, gray or white, would look younger if her hair were colored or highlighted?Ī: Not necessarily, I think that gray, silver and white hair is very sexy and chic. Rinse with apple cider, like my Fekkai Apple Cider Clarifying Shampoo which prevents gray hair from yellowing and imparts shine. If and when you do decide to stay with your natural gray, maintain it well. Again, a few low-lights or highlights can help ease the transition. However, if at least 50 percent of your hair is already gray, it might be time to go with the flow and embrace the gray. I would say, don’t use permanent color until you are at least 30 percent gray. Instead, opt for low-lights or highlights, or what we call “camouflage.” Fifty to sixty percent less gray will make you feel younger while still looking natural, and you won’t have to go to a salon nearly so often for touch-ups. Q: What is the best way for a woman who has decided to “go off the bottle” to grow out her dyed hair?Ī: Here are some simple tips: If you’ve got just a few gray hairs, don’t go for overall permanent color. Whatever your age, great hair is healthy hair with bounce, body, and shine. Also, your lifestyle - what you do day to day and how much time you are willing to devote to your hair. A good stylist will take many different factors into consideration - your eyes, your bone structure, the natural texture of your hair, as well as your height and body shape, your personal style and personality. The key to a great hairstyle is - does it work with YOU? - with ALL of you. Q: Is there a certain kind of woman who can pull off a completely gray or silver look, or is it more about the cut and color of her hairstyle?Ī: There is no one-size-fits-all. Take a look at Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada, part of the whole persona of Miranda Priestley was her chic, icy, albeit incredibly stylish hair. Gray hair on a woman lends a sense of confidence, style and elegance. Gray hair on a man is distinguished and lends character. Q: What’s the difference between a man choosing to go gray and a woman?Ī: Both can look incredibly chic. The fact that Hollywood has embraced aging differently is a reflection that society is more comfortable with embracing the natural aging process. I think there are many older celebrities and actresses that perfectly demonstrate that it is possible to age gracefully and beautifully. It’s silly to think that women stop looking beautiful and sexy after a certain age. Women in their 40’s and 50’s today still feel youthful, vibrant, strong and sexy, and they are projecting that out to the world. Q: If so, does this reflect a shift in society’s definition of aging?Ī: I think that women’s perceptions of themselves are changing, and that is reflected in society. If you combine a modern chic haircut with gray hair, the result is amazing. Q: Are more women today choosing to embrace their gray?Ī: Yes, in my experience, I have noticed more and more women choosing to embrace their gray hair.
